Re: Things Indifferent and Paul's Teaching in Romans 14
by
Jen
Woohoo! This rocks, Tim! Thanks for all your time and work! God's Word is so amazing and fun to figure out!
A question for you relating to Romans 14 and the issue of indifferent matters:
You said that regarding these matters we should do our best to engage in them in private, not public, lest we cause a weaker brother to stumble. Does this text require such a degree of caution? Verse 20 does state that "it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble" and verse 15 says "If your brother is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love". But couldn't these both be referring to blatant and stubborn exercise of freedom in the presence of an objecting weaker brother? Indeed, how would the weaker brother even know about the stronger brother's convictions if not for him having the opportunity to witness them? In I Cor. 10 Paul says it is alright (actually a command, right?) to eat anything without raising questions of conscience UNLESS the person with him raises the issue by pointing out the fact that the meat was offered to an idol. Doesn't this lend weight to a less "paranoid" (for lack of a better word!) approach to indifferent matters: that one may confidently and with thankful heart partake in such matters, even in public, UNLESS someone with them mentions the fact that they themselves do not regard such participation as an area offreedom in Christ?
In case this is confusing due to my racing hands hopped up on Caribou Coffee, let me restate with an example:
Are we free, as those who believe that alcohol may be consumed to the glory of God, to confidently partake IN PUBLIC, without worrying that someone might spot us and be tripped up by our freedom? Must we sneak around, wearing fake mustaches and/or driving to far-away liquor stores, to buy a pack of Mike's? Or may we enjoy our liberty, and willingly put it away if and when we know someone is with us who doesn't share our liberty?
Hope this makes sense!
Thanks again--I love this stuff!!!
